Susan A. Christie was born in 1942 in Minneapolis, the daughter of Robert E. and Doris E. (Freemantel) Christie. Her great-great grandparents were James C. (1811-1870) and Elizabeth (Gilchrist) ( -1834) Christie. She studied art with Japanese Sumi-e master Reiko Ito Shellum and later with Cheng Khee Chee at the University of Minnesota, Duluth. In 1984 she attended the Zhejuang Academy of Art in China. In 1994 Christie was based primarily in New Mexico. She relocated to Montana in 2001, and returned to New Mexico in 2006. Christie and her then-husband, Irving Kellman, owned SACK's Gallery & Paper Company (Minneapolis), which featured fabrics, textiles, ceramics, photography, paper and note cards (made by the company), and framing; SACK is an acronym for Susan A. Christie-Kellman.
