Elizabeth Sherer Russell was born on March 10, 1900 on the Cass Lake Indian Reservation. Her mother died in 1911 and shortly after, Russell and her sisters Emma and Ida were sent to Wahpeton Indian School, a boarding school in North Dakota. At boarding school they worked as maids in homes. She was given the option to become a nurse or a teacher and chose the nursing track.
In 1923 Russell graduated from Northwestern School of Nursing in Minneapolis as a registered nurse. After graduation she worked as a Public Health Nurse at Cass Lake and was part of the Chippewa Nursing Service until 1932.
Elizabeth Sherer Russell died in April of 1987.
