Gary W. Moss grew up in Robbinsdale, Minnesota and received formal art education at the Minneapolis College of Art and Design, graduating in 1968. Moss was drafted in 1969 into the United States Marine Corps and served as a combat artist during the Vietnam War. In 1970, he was awarded the distinguished honor of USMC Combat Artist of the Year. Following the war, Moss primarily established himself as a wildlife artist, spending a great deal of his time hunting, fishing, and painting based on his observances of the natural world. He has distinguished himself as an expert in waterfowl painting and was awarded numerous accolades for his work, including Best in Show Wildlife and Western Art (1982) with his work featured on the Federal Duck Stamp (1976-1982) and the Minnesota Duck Stamp (1983).
