Hill Family Collection Card Index
This index is a digital version of the card catalogs and calendars originally created by the James J. Hill Reference Library. The cards provide alphabetical and chronological lists that you can browse to find specific correspondents, topics, companies, persons, and places named in the Hill Family Collection. Some cards cite specific files and folders; others refer to chronological series of correspondence and letterpress books.
Note that this index is not a complete guide to every letter, correspondent, subject, or part of the collection. Also, the cards may contain typographical errors, incorrect shelf or series locations, as well as other inaccuracies that will not be updated. Consult the finding aids for the most current information.
The original cards are available for use in the Weyerhaeuser Reading Room of the Minnesota Historical Society Library and on microfilm for interlibrary loan.
James J. Hill Papers Card Index
The index to James J. Hill's papers focuses primarily on his general correspondence and letterpress books with occasional references to other series of correspondence. Particular emphasis was given to his correspondence with John S. Kennedy, Paris Gibson, E. T. Nichols, George Stephen, and Donald Smith. The majority of the cards list the date of a letter, the name of the letter writer, and sometimes a short description of the letter's content.
Louis W. Hill Papers Card Index
This index covers a broad spectrum of business and personal matters across Louis W. Hill's papers. Additionally, some household and family matters that are mentioned in Mary T. Hill's diaries and in the papers of Maud Van Cortlandt Taylor Hill are included. Many of the cards refer to outdated shelf and series locations from the Hill Reference Library; consult the finding aids for current locations.
