Finding Aid Statistics

The Minnesota Historical Society is the recipient of a Basic Project grant from the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) which will significantly support the cataloging of the Society's unprocessed archival collections. The project targets 4,600 cubic feet of government records and manuscript collections.

Ignatius Donnelly: An Inventory of His Family Papers 00782
Correspondence, literary materials, pamphlets, speeches, diaries, scrapbooks, financial records, and other materials documenting Donnelly's long and active career as townsite speculator at Nininger (Dakota County, Minn.), politician, author, editor and publisher of three newspapers, lieutenant governor of Minnesota (1860-1863), member of Congress (1863-1869), member of the Minnesota Senate (1874-1878, 1891-1893) and House (1887, 1897), and a national leader in third-party movements. Donnelly's correspondents were numbered by the hundreds and ranged from day laborers and local politicians to figures of national and international fame.

Views of Fairbrother's family and friends, including his wife (Minnie), children (Walter, Edward, Edith and George), and visits to his parents farm in Copenhagen, Ontario. Fairbrother documented the family's residences in St. Paul and White Bear Lake, Minn., his place of employment (Northern Pacific Railway Company, St.Paul), family gatherings, church picnics, holidays (the family Christmas trees), and visits to Minnehaha Park, Como Park, Duluth, and Stillwater.

Great Northern Railway Company (U.S.). President: An Inventory of James J. Hill Correspondence 00790
The records consist mainly of Hill's incoming business correspondence during his career as organizer and president of the St. Paul, Minneapolis and Manitoba Railroad Company, 1882-1890, and the Great Northern Railway Company, 1890-1907. Also included are scattered letters related to other railroad and corporate interests and to his family.

Logging Operations: An Inventory of Photographs sv000141
Views of hydraulic equipment loading and cutting logs. Most of the equipment was designed by Leo Heikkinen and manufactured by Prentice Hydraulics Inc., Wisconsin. Also a view of Tomahawk Lumber Co.'s Forest Center, located north of Isabella. The booklets include three advertisements for Prentice products and one commemorating Leo Heikkinen Day in Prentice, Wisc. on Aug. 31, 1996.

Mondale's personal papers document his family, education, military service, and political activities. Included are correspondence, telephone logs, photographs, memorabilia, and drafts of a Mondale biography written by Steven M. Gillon.

Political papers and campaign files (1934-2004) include materials from Mondale's 1962 Attorney General campaign, 1962 and 1966 Senate campaigns, the 1976 and 1980 Presidential campaigns where Mondale ran as Jimmy Carter's Vice President, and extensive files from the 1984 Presidential campaign in which Mondale ran for President against Ronald Reagan.

Materials from Mondale's U.S. Senate career include schedules and appointments, meeting files, bill and committee files, outgoing correspondence, sampled constituent correspondence and constituent service records, press releases, speeches, radio broadcasts, and news clippings. A large set of wide-ranging issue files kept for each year by Mondale's Senate office concern federal departments, international affairs, domestic matters, and state issues.

Correspondence, financial records, legal papers, speeches, and miscellany of this early Minnesota fur trader, entrepreneur, and governor. More than a third of the papers concern the fur trade with the Dakota Indians of the Upper Mississippi Valley from 1815 to 1855, documenting Sibley's business association with the American Fur Company and its successor, Pierre Chouteau, Jr., and Company, as well as his interest in the treaties, wars, and welfare of the Dakota.

The chronological files contain briefs, written arguments detailing the legal basis of an appeal; case records, containing court reporters' transcripts of testimony; and lawyers' statements and exhibits. The case files heard by the Court of Appeals are included in the same numerical sequence as those heard by the Supreme Court.
