NHPRC Basic Project Grant
This past June, we completed the first half of our 18-month National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) Basic Project grant to process and catalog 4,700 cubic feet of backlogged government records and manuscripts acquisitions. During this period the grant team completed 368 acquisitions of 2,091 cubic feet resulting in 486 catalog records and 400 finding aids.
Early project results indicate complete processing and cataloging rates of 1 hour per cubic foot for government records and 2-1/2 hours per cubic foot for manuscripts.
Other projects focused on our reserve items and nationally significant collections have resulted in a fast-growing body of digital content. Digital versions are now available for portions of the papers of James J. Hill, Louis W. Hill, Harold Stassen, Walter Mondale, our sheet music collections, and reserve items related to the Civil War, U.S.-Dakota relations, the James-Younger raid on the Northfield bank, and the criminal history files of notorious 1930s era gangsters such as John Dillinger and Pretty Boy Floyd.
With all these projects over the past year, we added 630 new finding aids and over 5000 digital files. But more significantly, we saw a 9% increase in the number of archival boxes that were used by visitors in our library! We believe this increased use can be attributed to increased access and discoverability.
