NHPRC Basic Project Grant

This month we give you a sneak peek at a 336-reel microfilm collection that we have been cataloging over the last two months.

Microfilmed by the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, this collection contains church records from congregations centered in Norwegian communities in New York, Texas, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, South Dakota, North Dakota, Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and even a few in China.

This page from Membership Record Book 1 kept by the Red Oak Grove Lutheran Church in Mower County, Minnesota shows the name and age of each person in each family that belonged to that congregation in 1872.

Membership page

Membership records typically include family registries but also include more detailed baptismal, marriage, and funeral records. These are primarily written in Norwegian and English but some German and Chinese are also evident. These records complement existing birth, census, marriage, and death records in our government records as well as other church records in our manuscripts collection and will be a rich resource for family historians.

Microfillm frames

We plan to complete the collection in February. Processing and cataloging it requires reading each microfilm reel to record its contents. A finding aid will list the contents of each reel by church name, township or city, county, state, record title, record dates, and language.

The Minnesota Historical Society was awarded a Basic Project grant by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC) that is significantly supporting public access to the Society's backlogged acquisitions of government records and manuscripts collections.
