NHPRC Basic Project Grant

This month we focused on several collections related to one of the most notorious western land ventures in American history -- the claim made by Jonathan Carver's heirs that the Dakota chiefs, Hawnopawjatin and Otohtongooomlisheaw, in a ceremony at a cave on the Mississippi River that took place May 1, 1767, had granted Carver a deed of several million acres of land in what is now St. Paul, portions of Minneapolis, and much of west central Wisconsin.

Although Carver never mentioned this ceremony in his Travels through the Interior Parts of North America (1778) and the deed was said to have disappeared, Carver's heirs tried to capitalize on the grant by petitioning Congress to recognize its validity, and by selling and reselling lands in the region. Attempts to profit from the grant lasted decades and enveloped scores of Carver family members, land speculators, and potential settlers. The validity of the grant was never proven and all hopes to realize its financial gain vanished by 1834.

Deed of conveyance from Zebulon Harmon to Isaac M. Chesbrough, September 16, 1817

These collections include a journal kept by Carver during his Mississippi River exploration (1766-1767) with surveys and deeds of the land grant, correspondence from Samuel Peters to Samuel Harrison regarding their efforts to validate the claim long after Carver's death,

collected deeds and court records regarding Carver family interests in Crawford County, Wisconsin, letters and accounts of fur trader Robert Rogers who had tried to engage Carver in a search for the Northwest Passage, and various other deeds, indentures, depositions, and legal papers compiled by land speculator Robinson Tyndale that help document these long-standing claims and the people involved in the controversy.
