Saint Paul Union Depot Company: An Inventory of Its Records 00770
Minutes (1897-1970), annual reports (1885-1980), correspondence and subject files (1910s-1970s), payroll records (1885-1970), accounting records (1879-1977), operating statements (1921-1975), engineering and architectural drawings (1889-1954), and miscellaneous legal and financial papers (1896-1955) documenting the existence of a now defunct company organized in 1879 to serve the nine major railroads entering the Twin Cities. The jointly owned and operated company controlled 9.24 miles of St. Paul trackage and terminal facilities, including the depot building. The company was operated in tandem with the Minnesota Transfer Railway Company, with effective control of both properties exercised by the same board comprised of representatives of the nine joint tenants. The current depot facility was built during 1919-1924; passenger service ceased in 1971.

Microfilmed transcripts of correspondence, journals, business records, diaries, and other papers relating to Lord Selkirk and his colony on the Red River near the present site of Winnipeg, Canada. Among the letters is a group (1816-1817) written by several of Selkirk's men who wintered at fur trading posts in northern Minnesota, including many by Pierre Chrysologue Pambrun. Also present is a group of North West Company papers, dated as early as 1798, found by Selkirk when he captured the company's post at Fort William (Ontario) in August 1816.

Two volumes (1894-1897) contain narrative reports, possibly of the parole agent, of initial interviews with inmates upon their arrival, and of subsequent contact with the inmates while at the institution. The initial reports contain the inmate's case history, as told to the narrator, and the narrator's assessment of the inmate's character. Subsequent notations relate to contacts with parents and others, and inmate complaints or requests for assistance in handling personal affairs outside the institution. The other volume (1893-1895) contains briefer notes regarding the inmate's case history, often only the conviction resulting in commitment, and results of contacts with parents, previous employers, or other references.

If the inmate was no longer in the prison, the name is crossed off with a date and reason (ie., paroled, pardoned, deceased...). These books were updated and new volumes started every 3-7 years. When a new volume was started it appears the inmates who were still in the prison (as listed in the previous book) were entered first, followed by new inmates.

As a result of the number assignment, the files also form a chronological sequence from 1900 to 1972, with the bulk of the admission dates falling between 1914 and 1954. The files contain the record of medical treatment and care for each inmate during his or her incarceration at Stillwater. Most include a one-page record of a physical examination performed upon admission to the prison; listing register number, name and known aliases, race, date admitted, crime, age, county received from, length of sentence, and former occupation. Nationality, date and place of birth, time as Minnesota and U.S. resident before the crime, father's and mother's name and place of birth, and incidences of insanity, tuberculosis, and cancer in the immediate family are noted as well. The form also records the physical and mental condition of the inmate on admission and discharge. Deaths and causes of deaths also are recorded.

Mainly sentence expiration books (1906-1980s) that are monthly lists of convicts whose sentences were due to expire. It appears that as inmates were received, their names and register (inmate) numbers were recorded under the month in which they were due to be discharged. Information concerning an inmate's discharge or parole was then listed in the same place. The volumes for 1906-1927 and 1920-1950 also have lists of discharge dates for inmates who were scheduled for discharge after the period covered by the book. The volumes appear to have been last altered in the early 1980s, although they do contain lists of discharge dates of inmates scheduled for release up to 2037.
