Great Northern and Northern Pacific Railroad Records
For over 100 years the Great Northern and Northern Pacific railway companies delivered people, presidents, and potatoes from the Midwest to the Pacific Ocean. Available online for the first time ever, are the inventories to these extensive records held by the Minnesota Historical Society.
The inventories for these collections has, until recently, only been available in the Society's reading room, but now you can explore the multitude of records on our website! Documenting all facets of the railroads' development and the communities they served, these finding aids allow for more convenient browsing, faster searching, and the discovery of related materials that may have been overlooked before.
That's right! Minneapolis to Minot, Grand Forks to Great Falls, and Sand Point to Seattle, all stops along the railroad to research are now available online. Travel the rails to Glacier and Yellowstone national parks, finagle your way through financial records, peruse photographs, and muse over mechanical drawings. NHPRC Basic Project Grant
From October 2010 through June 2012, the Minnesota Historical Society's archival processing program has been supported by a Basic Project grant awarded by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission (NHPRC). This grant, aimed at processing and cataloging a backlog of 4,700 cubic feet, has significantly increased public access to the Society's government records and manuscripts collections.

The Forest History Oral History Project is a group of interviews conducted and compiled by John Esse on the history of northern Minnesota. These interviews capture the lives of men and women who homesteaded or came north to work in the lumber industry in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. While some came from Europe and others from around the Midwest, their stories have a consistent message of community, hard work, and the nature surrounding them in northern Minnesota. Interviewees give numerous depictions of life in a lumber camp and the various jobs they held at lumber companies and mills. Minutes (1897-1985), annual reports (1885-1980), correspondence and subject files (1910s-1970s), payroll records (1885-1970), accounting records (1879-1977), operating statements (1921-1975), engineering and architectural drawings (1889-1954), and miscellaneous legal and financial papers (1896-1955) documenting the existence of a now defunct company organized in 1879 to serve the nine major railroads entering the Twin Cities. The jointly owned and operated company controlled 9.24 miles of St. Paul trackage and terminal facilities, including the depot building. The company was operated in tandem with the Minnesota Transfer Railway Company, with effective control of both properties exercised by the same board comprised of representatives of the nine joint tenants. The current depot facility was built during 1919-1924; passenger service ceased in 1971. | |
