What's New
Winter is upon us. These pictures come from the President's Office subject files (Nos. 227 and 231) of the Northern Pacific Railway Company records. This gigantic series of correspondence and related records now has finding aids that are available online for the first time.
The 916 boxes of records in this collection share over 70 years of correspondence that kept the presidents and senior officers of the company informed. In the winter, weather emergencies were a huge issue and equipment was needed to help keep the trains running. Below is a view of the Russell Snow Plow No. 27 stuck in the snow in the February storm of 1946 which halted all train services in the Minnesota/North Dakota territory for a period of four days, diverted 935 rail cars, and cost an estimated $187,000 in lost revenue. To the right is a Diesel-Electric Rotary Snow Plow No. 205099, which was completely redesigned and rebuilt in 1949 to perform better in emergencies of this kind.
