Steamboat

Recently added to the manuscript collections are Mark Vander Schaaf's files on the Grand Excursion of 2004, a recreation of the 1854 Grand Excursion that celebrated the completion of the Chicago and Rock Island Railroad, the first railroad connection to the Mississippi River. Like its predecessor, the 2004 event climaxed in a grand steamboat flotilla up the Mississippi from the Quad Cities (Illinois and Iowa) to Saint Paul and Minneapolis, June 25-July 5, 2004.

Grand Excursion 2004 organizers partnered with more than 40 communities along the Upper Mississippi to develop a series of events to commemorate the 1854 event and to educate the public about the river and its history. The endeavor included such cities as Rock Island, Cedar Rapids, Dubuque, Prairie du Chien, La Crosse, Winona, Red Wing, Saint Paul, and Minneapolis.

Vander Schaaf, then an economic planner with the Saint Paul Department of Planning and Economic Development, was involved in organizing and planning the event. His files include planning and press files containing minutes, correspondence, reports, transcripts of 1854 news accounts, contemporary clippings from newspapers in towns located along the Mississippi River, planning guides and manuals, posters publicizing the event, and snapshot photographs taken by Vander Schaaf during the flotilla.
