What's New
Recently State Archives acquired more records from the Cass County Auditor. From details in these records we can get a feel for twentieth century life in the county.
On Leech Lake River, in the northern part of the county, an early hand-drawn plat map shows many houses situated directly next to the river, hopefully allowing people to enjoy the great August weather in Minnesota near a body of water, as Minnesotans tend to do.
In the southern part of the county, however, the bobcat bounty records list one W. E. McKercher as having killed six bobcats in Outing in August 1949. Only a month later John Nelson is listed as having killed two more in Remer, even closer to the rivers and lakes where people may be enjoying the last weeks of summer. Cass County might have actually been quite a dangerous place to be that summer!
See the State Archives post about these records on Facebook.
