Ember Reichgott Junge

Recently added to the Minnesota Historical Society manuscript collections are the papers of Ember Reichgott Junge, a Democratic-Farmer-Labor (DFL) state senator who served in the Minnesota Legislature from 1982 to 2000.

In addition to her legislative files, much of which center on charter schools, the collection includes files relating to a book she was writing to be called Two Parties and a Jesse, which was to be an insider's look at legislating in an era of tri-party government during the governorship of Governor Jesse Ventura. Ventura, a former professional wrestler, served as the state's 38th governor from 1999 to 2003.

Much of the book was to be based upon Reichgott Junge's personal journal (Book Musings, 1999-2000), also a part of the collection, in which she made candid comments and observations about legislators, politics and the legislative process as the Republican-controlled House and the DFL-controlled Senate grappled with the celebrity Reform Party governor.

The collection includes drafts of two chapters of what was to have been a six-chapter book, commenting on legislative strategy, deal-making, the personalities of Ventura and of other legislative leaders, and law making in Minnesota's experiment with three-party government. The book, unfortunately, was never published.

The Minnesota State Archives also contain Jesse Ventura's gubernatorial records.
