What's New

We're excited to announce that we've recently added to the manuscripts collections a handwritten lyric, on lined yellow paper, signed by the late Minneapolis funk-rock musician Prince, containing his never-released song I Hope We Work it Out.

Written at the suggestion of Minneapolis music producer David Rivkin, the song is believed to have been recorded at Sound80 studio in Minneapolis in 1977 and was played during a private luncheon when Prince flew to California to sign his recording contract with Warner Bros. at the age of 18.

The lyric sheet contains Prince's artistic embellishments in the title and two simple mathematical calculations at the bottom of the page. Warner Bros. is referred to as W.B. in the lyrics.

A version of the song was posted on YouTube in May of last year.

This lyric joins several other Prince-related artifacts in the Society's collections, perhaps most notably the purple jacket, white ruffled shirt, and studded pants Prince wore in the 1984 film Purple Rain, and a pair of purple lace gloves from the same period.
