What's New

Nelson and others, Company B, 13th Minnesota A new addition to the catalog this month is the Thirteenth Minnesota Volunteer Infantry Regiment sound and visual collection. The collection documents the activities of the regiment, particularly companies B and K, including preparations for the Spanish-American war, views of the Philippines following the war, celebrations upon their return, and reunions. The majority of subjects in the collection are identified including a digitized series of carte de visite photographs. This photographic format, losing popularity at the time to the larger cabinet cards and later to Brownie cameras, was a popular and inexpensive way for soldiers to obtain and send pictures of themselves back home. The collection also includes audio from 1948 introducing Clarence Keatley and other soldiers of the Thirteenth Minnesota who visited St. Paul for the 50th anniversary of the regiment's assembly at the capitol and march to the fairgrounds. You can listen to the recording and see more of the collection here.
