What's New

New to the manuscripts collection this month are papers of Minnesota hero Thomas E. Burnett, Jr., who lost his life in the crash of United Airlines Flight 93 near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, on September 11, 2001.

Burnett was one of four passengers who heroically attempted to take back their hijacked flight from Al-Qaeda terrorists who after overpowering the flight crew turned the San Francisco-bound flight around and, it is believed, intended to crash it into the U.S. Capitol building or some other Washington, D.C. target.

Burnett grew up in Bloomington, was a graduate of Thomas Jefferson Senior High School, attended Saint John's University, Collegeville, and the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota. At the time of his death he was a senior vice president and chief operating officer of Thoratec Corporation, a medical devices company based in Pleasanton, California.

You Are Remembered

The collection consists primarily of letters, cards, emails, and other condolences received by Burnett's family and by his employer, news accounts, and published materials. Particularly touching are handmade memorial letters and cards received from school children in Minnesota and elsewhere. Equally poignant, the collection includes a college essay written by Burnett entitled "Why is the United States the Focus of so much Terrorism?"
