What's New
This month saw an addition of new material to the T. B. Walker and Family Papers, a large collection of business records and personal papers of a Minneapolis lumberman and his family.
Thomas Barlow Walker (1840-1928) arrived in Minneapolis from Ohio in 1862 and made his fortune in lumbering, operating initially in northern Minnesota and later expanding into northern California where he amassed thousands of acres of timber, built a large sawmill, and a company town. In about 1874 he began collecting art, his private collection eventually evolving into today's Walker Art Center.
As interesting as the family's lumbering activities are, just as interesting are their real estate investment activities in Minneapolis, where they were major players in commercial real estate, particularly along Hennepin Avenue and in the city's warehouse district. The collection includes real estate maps of downtown Minneapolis, and dozens of architectural drawings of commercial structures they built and owned.
Of special interest are architectural drawings of the State Theater, built by the Walkers in the 1920s on Hennepin Avenue, which has been beautifully restored and is today an active concert and live performance venue in Minneapolis' theater and entertainment district. There is also a nice set of drawings of the Commodore Hotel in St. Paul, which the family owned as well.
