What's New -- December 2019

This month we highlight additions to the papers of two Minnesota businessmen, Thomas J. Meighen and Ronald M. Hubbs, two individuals who were involved in a host of business, civic, educational, religious, and other organizations. Each also has a connection to the Minnesota Historical Society.

Thomas J. Meighen and Family Papers

Thomas J. and Mary MeighenWilliam and Felix Meighen were Irish-American brothers who moved westward from Pennsylvania to Illinois before making their homes at Forestville, a small and growing town on the banks of the Root River in Fillmore County. Among their many activities, William Meighen operated a hotel and Felix opened a general store, each in separate partnerships with Felix's brothers-in-law Major and Robert Foster.

Thomas J. Meighen, the son of Felix and Eliza Jane Foster, was born in 1855 and was the first of the Meighen children to be born in the Minnesota Territory. In 1868 when Robert Foster decided to concentrate on farming, he sold his interest in the general store to Felix. Thomas left school and began working full-time for his father and helped expand the family's interest in farming and land holdings. Ten years later, Thomas assumed full management of the store.

When the Southern Minnesota Railroad bypassed Forestville in 1868, many merchants and farm families started to leave the town. In the following decades, other railroads bypassed Forestville and the little town eventually dried up. By 1905, Thomas and his family were living in Preston where Thomas served as president of the First National Bank. Thomas closed the store in 1910 and much of the merchandise was simply left on the shelves. Following Thomas' death in 1936, the Forestville townsite, historic buildings, and other land holdings were transferred to the Department of Natural Resources. Forestville State Park was formed in 1963, and, in 1978, the store and what remained of the town became Historic Forestville, an historic site operated by the Minnesota Historical Society within Forestville State Park.

The Thomas J. Meighen and Family Papers include business and personal correspondence, photographs, clippings, pamphlets and cards, political literature, diaries, a scrapbook, memorandum books, music books, and subject files. Financial and accounting records include bills and accounts, ledgers, day books, cashbooks, and other materials. Some files related to the Meighen Store historic site are also included.
