George Morrison Papers
We are delighted to share the papers of Ojibwe painter, sculptor, and university professor George Morrison. One of Minnesota's most notable artists, George Morrison is known for his abstract paintings, wood collages, and totemic sculptures. Much of his work focused on natural landscapes and horizon lines. In his six decade career, Morrison garnered international acclaim and is recognized as a founder of Native Modernism.

Born in Chippewa City, Minnesota in 1919, near the Grand Portage Reservation, Morrison left home at a young age to pursue a career in art. His travels led to opportunities abroad and cemented his work in the Abstract Expressionist scene of New York City in the 1940s and 1950s. In this environment, he developed as an abstract artist and educator, and collaborated with important contemporaries of the time, such as Williem de Kooning, Jackson Pollack, and Franz Kline. In 1970, Morrison returned to Minnesota. He taught studio art and helped found the American Indian Studies Department at the University of Minnesota. In his later years, he began to produce abstract work that represented the natural landscapes of his home on Lake Superior and more overtly reflected his cultural heritage.

George Morrison's papers document Morrison's life and work. This includes genealogical charts, photographs, and historical information regarding his roots in Chippewa City, and the Grand Portage Band of Chippewa of Lake Superior. Personal letters from friends and family, photographs, and Morrison's personal journal and planner document Morrison's personal thoughts, philosophies, and his personal and family life. Interviews, clippings, articles, biographies, and curriculum vitae provide biographical information for Morrison, and additional insight into how Morrison regarded his own work and legacy.
Exhibition materials, business records, and public art project plans and proposals explore the span of his career, including:
• Early student exhibitions at the Art Students League (ASL) of New York City (1943-1946);
• His numerous solo and group exhibitions Morrison held at the Grand Central Art Galleries of New York City (1947-1960s);
• Exhibitions held throughout the East Coast and Midwest (1950s-1970);
• Public art projects and exhibitions Morrison held during his teaching career in Minnesota (1970-1983); and
• Exhibitions following his retirement from teaching (1983-1990s).
The papers also consist of teaching materials from the University of Minnesota, the Rhode Island School of Design, and various colleges that provide insight into Morrison's teaching philosophy, methods, and subject matter.
The collection was cataloged and select materials digitized with generous support of The Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation.
